What Causes Irregular Periods Along With Spotting In A 47 Year Old?

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Jul 2015
Question: Hi, I am 47, have regular periods although they can be anything from 21-35 apart now, whereas previously they were every 26 days. I recently took Norethisterone to delay a period although I only took 4 tablets (just over one day's worth) as the trip I was going on was cancelled. I had a bit of spotting for one day, four days after taking the last tablet, then nothing until three days later when I had an extremely light 'period' lasting barely two days. About a week before I started taking the tablets, I had unprotected sex, but as my period was due, I didn't worry. Then I had the odd bleeding (which I think is normal after taking Norethisterone), however I did take a pregnancy test a week later (two weeks after the unprotected sex) which was negative. It is now day 28 since I had the first spotting and there is no sign of my period or any symptoms of it. Can you confirm whether or not it is normal to have two separate episodes of spotting/light bleeding as I have described and then for a month to go by without any sign of my normal period. I haven't done another pregnancy test, but I'm sure I can't be pregnant due in part to my age and also the timing of the sex. Many thanks.

Brief Answer:
It is normal, pregnancy not likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
At 47 , it is very usual to have slightly irregular bleeding / spotting.
Yes, it is normal after taking an odd dose of Norethisterone to have light bleeding and then one more episode a few days later, which would be your proper period, albeit light.
I do not think you are likely to be pregnant.
Wait a few more days, and you will have your period.
you can repeat the test, just to be sure.
All the best
