What Causes Irregular Menstruation While On Birth Control Pills?

default
Posted on Tue, 21 Mar 2017
Question: Hi, I had birth control pill just for a month then I got very light period which I don't think it's a period at all, it's a brownish discharge like the symptoms of implantation bleeding...by that time I still thought that is just a very light period so I did not think too much, two and a half weeks later I had a colposcopy and one biopsy done then I started feeling very itchy underneath for five days, so then I used canesten pessary for thrush with the applicator for three days, my expected period should be on the first day I started using the pessary, but my period didn't come, until the day after I completed my pessary, I started having some chalky pink spotting or discharged on wipes after pee, but I never have this before even day before my period normally, that night my lower abdomen area started getting pain, and the last time I went to toilet that night I felt a big drop of thing came from my womb, I looked at it it is some blood tissues or cells, I remain lower abdominal pain over night, and when I woke up after which is today, I had a lot of blood like a really really heavy period that soaked my pad, I do believe I might have a miscarriage bleeding so I went straight to pharmacy and got a pregnancy test at home, but it shows not pregnant, am I thinking too much that I might had pregnant and miscarried? I never had that heavy late period or lower abdominal pain before, and the very light period the month before I found it very strange... I am 26 so my period cycle are very regular before. My question is am I having miscarriage? Should I go to the doctors to get blood tests done? If I do have miscarriage, do I need to get shots to prevent building antibodies after miscarriage ( I heard I need to do so if my blood type is Rh negative and father is Rh positive)? Please reply!

Hello XXXXXXX

In the first 2-3 months of taking a birth control pill, periods can be irregular. There can be intermittent spotting, missed periods, etc. But in most cases, it is still working.

If the pregnancy test was negative during the symptoms that you thought might be miscarriage, you most likely were not pregnant. It might have been clotting and menstrual tissue. As you had a very light period the first month, this might have been heavier as a result.

But I still think you should go in to see your doctor. Your doctor may repeat the pregnancy test, do an exam, and discuss whether this represented a miscarriage or dysfunctional bleeding, for which you might need a different hormonal preparation (if you've been on the pill for over 2-3 months now).

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide more information.

Hi Doctor, thanks for the reply, just want to know can I just leave it and don't go to the doctors? If I did miscarried, will it all clear by itself and have next period as normal? More importantly, what are the chances of getting pregnant again with my same partner? I'm experiencing a very heavy bleeding now.. I hope it's just period

I think it would be best to go in to your doctor to try to sort out what is happening.

While the first few months on the pill can be atypical, it shouldn't involve heavy bleeding. So it would be best to be checked.

Hi XXXXXXX

Your periods most likely will return to normal again in the next 1-2 cycles whether you miscarried or not. But given that your pregnancy test, at the time you had the symptoms, was negative, most likely you were not pregnant.

Regarding getting pregnant, I would think your chances are the same as they were before you went on the pill.

I still think it would be best for you to go in to see your doctor. If this was a miscarriage, the doctor will likely want to do an ultrasound to make sure that all the tissue is gone.
