What Causes Irregular Menstruation, Cramps, Tender Breasts And Water Retention?

default
Posted on Wed, 3 Feb 2016
Question: I've been having irregular periods for the past two years (sometimes every 4-6 months, other times 2 periods in a row). I'm just curious as to what this could be. I was never worried about it until now because ive become sexually active and Im scared i could be pregnant. Ive been having PMS symptoms lately but no period (cramps, tender breasts, water retention) and I did have a very light period a few months ago but that was the last time ive had a period in a long time. I had yellow vaginal discharge today which scared me and im just wondering what could be causing my periods to be so irregular?

Brief Answer:
Hormonal disturbances likely

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Irregular periods can be due to hormonal disturbances like hypothyroidism, hyperprolactemia or polycystic ovarian disease.
At your age group, the most common hormonal disturbance is polycystic ovarian syndrome.
I will suggest you to get your hormonal profile and ultrasound done.
Hormonal profile should include thyroid hormone levels, prolactin levels and testosterone levels.

Ok thank you and im going back to university tomorrow so there isnt anyone i can get those tests from for a while because i will be very busy. Would you say that it is urgent i get these tests done? Or will i be able to wait a month or two? Also is polycystic ovarian disease a serious condition? Can it be left untreated?

Brief Answer:
Not a serious condition

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
Itsnot ururgent to get these investigations done.
You can get these investigations whenever you have time.
Polycystic ovarian disease is not a serious condition.
It is a hormonal disturbance in which there is irregular or no ovulation, insulin resistance, irregular periods, and can lead to hirsutism( excessive hair growth on the face , thighs, abdomen).
It should be diagnosed and treated as it can lead to deranged blood sugar levels, if left untreated for a long time.
You should not take stress.
I am always here to help you.
