Question: Hi,
I am 27years old, from past two days I am feeling that my heart beat is suddenly increasing involuntarily. The effect of such erratic heart beat is that my around my sternum I am feeling a hollow sensation. The effect is most probably not there when am sleeping as I am having a comfortable undisturbed sleep.
I have high cholesterol, triglyceride levels, I have taken statin for 3 months and am without medication since past 3 months. Always had a normal ECG, done during several health test, the latest being 7 months back.
Kindly suggest what could be causing such an effect, and is there anything to be alarmed of?

Dear Sir
Multiple episodes of involuntary increase in heart rate can be due to rhythm disorder of heart. The best way to look at it is to get an ECG done at the time of episode. Only after deciphering the rhythm at the time of episode further evaluation can be done. If there is a loss of consciousness or attentiveness, chest pain, shortness of breath, vertigo , blackout associated with this increase in heart rate, then it becomes an emergency. You should visit a health care facility to get an ECG done and get evaluated. It may turn out to be benign but definitely needs evaluation at earliest.
At times systemic problems like common cold , lung infections, thyroid diseases may be responsible for such episodes (and heart being absolutely normal), however only examination by a your doctor can ascertain that.
Hope this helps. Feel free to discuss further.
