What Causes Intermittent Sharp Pain In Temple?

default
Posted on Mon, 12 Jan 2015
Question: Been having sharp pain shoot in my temple. It comes and goes and has been doing this for a few weeks. I don't have any other symptoms. I got a hormone shot about a month ago and I am at the end of the shot and every time I get on I have weird side effects from it. Could this be one. I have thought about sinuses. I do have problems with them. But that seems to be better. This is about to freak me out. What could be going on?

Brief Answer:
Several possible causes listed, more info helpful

Detailed Answer:
I read your query and I understand your concern.

Headaches can originate from a long list of causes. In order to make an accurate evaluation and help you it would be useful if I could have some more info on your headaches, such as:

1.     1.     How long since the pain has started? You already state it by saying a few weeks but since I see you have complained about headache in May 2014, I was wondering if maybe it has been longer then a few weeks.
2.     Is it always on the same side or switches side, or is it bilateral even?
3.     How long does each attack last (seconds, minutes, hours)?
4.     How often do the attacks occurr (approximately how many times a day, a week, a month)?
5.     Are there any factors to trigger, exacerbate or sooth the pain (local pressure or touch, head position, time of day, stress, sleep, light, sounds, physical activity, odors, chewing)?
6.     Are there any other phenomena (eye lacrimation, nasal congestion, facial flushing, nausea, vomiting, fever etc).
7.     Are there any visual changes?
8.     Do usual over the counter painkillers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen stop it?

Any other info you might add on your symptoms or other medical conditions or drugs you are taking might be helpful.

I read that you have done a CT scan this year which is a good thing, excludes some nasty diagnostic possibilities.

Judging only from the data you have provided until now several possibilities like cluster headache, paroxysmal hemicrania, trigeminal neuralgia, temporal arteritis, temporomandibular joint dysfunction. Perhaps I could be more precise if you answer the questions above.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
