default
Posted on Thu, 24 Aug 2017
Question: I am a 82 year old male. I have been having an intermittent pain on some days ( at any time of the day) in both my legs for the last one year. The pain is mainly in calf region. The calf region is stone hard. There is no discoloration and no part is swollen. The pain aggravates if I walk or stand for long period as I am an advocate by profession. Once triggered it does not subside for hours even if I lie flat on the bed. If I try to stretch my leg I get a muscle catch. I have undergone angioplasty in 2014. I am non diabetic, spiritual and have an overall good health. I have no vices. Currently I am not taking any medication for this pain except the ones prescribed by my doctors post my surgery. These are tab Evion 400 ; Ecosprin and TelvasH40

Brief Answer:
Can be due to many causes.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The intermittent pain in the legs can be due to-

1. Calf muscle strain and tear - Usually due to overwork and overstretching of the muscles. Recent increase in leg exercises may cause these. Gradual increase in exercise and pain killers with mild anti inflammatory drugs can help in reducing the symptoms.

2. Osteoarthritis- age related degeneration and low levels of calcium and vitamin D3.

3. Muscle ischaemia- associated with diabetes usually. There is acute pain associated with it.

4. Deep vein thrombosis- comes last among the list of probable diagnosis.

You may get the initial physical examination, relevant tests and treatment done under care of 'Orthopaedician'.

I hope this answers your query.

Dear Dr.Tayal,

I am sorry to say that your answer does not address my question. It is more generic and not specific to my question. I was expecting you to advise any specific tests that I need to undergo for better understanding of the problem and suggest a remedy but to the contrary its just a general knowledge answer.

Brief Answer:
Blood test and color doppler will help in diagnosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
I am sorry for not suggesting the appropriate tests to rule out the abovesaid causes of the calf pain. You need to get your serum CPk levels and electrolyte levels evaluated. Color doppler of the calves will help in ruling out the thrombosis.
Hope my answer is helpful.
