default
Posted on Fri, 1 Jul 2016
Question: I'm having some minor, interrmittant diarrhea & low grade lower intestinal pain...and believe I must have some minor IBS and/or a sensitivity to the regular Rx's & supplements I routinely take. Have just been looking at each, to see which have side effects including my current issues. My list is as follows:
Daily - Rx
Atorvastatin (Lipitor) generic 40 mg.
Lisinopril 10 mg.
Doxazosin (Cadura generic) 6 mg.
2x2mg night 1x2 mg morning
Prilosec 10-20 mg
Potassium Citrate 1080 mg
Weekly -Rx
Alendronate Sodium 70 mg

Sleep aid - nightly
1 tylenol PM or Kirkland equivalent
Or 1 benadryl 25 mg @ bedtime
Daily – OTC
B-12 1000 mcg
D-3 2000 IU
1 FibreTab 625 mg.
1 81 mg. Aspirin
2x 600 mg. Calcium

WOULD YOU EXPECT THIS COMBINATION TO CAUSE MY CURRENT (MINOR) ISSUES?

Brief Answer:
acute history of intermittent diarrhea- most likely medication S/E

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mr XXXX,

Thank you for posting query at HCM.

IBS is very unlikely at your age group.
Most likely diarrhea is secondary to medications.

I would advice you to visit your treating physician and discuss to:

1. swtich doxazosin to another drug from same class if indicated for a specific disease OR switch doxazosin to a different hypertensive agent if drug used merely used for hypertension
2. swtich prilosec to pantoprazole OR esomeprazole
3. advice you discontinuing the OTC supplements your taking on your own

I hope these steps will help you counter diarrhea.

Any further questions are welcomed.
Hope to answer your concern.

Regards,
Dr Tayyab Malik
