What Causes Inflammation And Pain Behind The Ear Lobe?

default
Posted on Wed, 5 Aug 2015
Question: Hi – the muscle or gland that feels round and is behind the ear lobe in the neck on my right side is firm, tender and painful and over the last four days I have had pain from my neck to my head (headache) that doesn't go away and is only slightly better after taking Tylenol. Is this just a muscle strain or should I worry? And what will take away the pain (I can't take ibuprofen or aspirin because it upsets my stomach ). Thank you.

Brief Answer:
It is likely to be lymphadenitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

As per your symptoms, it is likely to be lymphadenitis (which is mostly due to bacterial infection) of neck but the visual inspection at the site with clinical examination will confirm the diagnosis.

If pain is relieved by taking Tylenol then you can continue with that but you will also need short course of antibiotics (cephalosporins preferably) and antacid (ranitidine or pantoprazole) if pain killer tablets cause your stomach upset.

You can consult some local doctor or your GP who will know about the antibiotics and other drugs and can order routine blood count ( to rule out infection) and other required tests.(FNAC or ultrasound of local part)

With antibiotics course, you will feel better within 2 to 3 days.So there is no need to worry.

Hope this will help you.
