What Causes Increased Hotf Lashes And Acne Breakouts After Menopause?

default
Posted on Thu, 24 Apr 2014
Question: Hello. I am 62 years old. I went through menopause over 7 years ago. In the past few months I've been experiencing increased hot flashes, acne-type breakouts on my face, shoulders, back, and most recently bilateral nipple discomfort. I had testosterone levels checked and they were normal. Thyroid normal. Any ideas?

Brief Answer: detailed answer provided Detailed Answer: Hello and welcome, I understand your problem. The acne type breakout is unusual at your age. Other lesions that mimic acne are folliculitis or infection of hair follicles and rosacea a rash similar to acne but may be more redder. The hot flashes may occur at any age during the perimenopausal period but are more common in the years preceding menopause and just after menopause. The ovaries do continue to function at a lower scale after menopause and some amount of estrogen is produced in fat tissue. So if this is sufficient to meet the body needs the flashes may not appear until these levels dwindle. Another reason for the flashes may be infection and fever [ the acne may be an infection], drugs for blood pressure that relax blood vessels, or any hormone secreting tumors like carcinoid that tend to dilate blood vessels, certain spicy foods and certain drugs and even stress may cause them so they are not very specific for a certain condition. So please check if you are having a temperature. Also all the medications that you are using need to be checked and the duration since you are using them must be evaluated. You will also need to see a doctor for the skin rash and get it evaluated. It is better to see a physician as the reason for the flashes does not seem to be related to menopause as of now. A few test like a blood pressure check and blood tests for carcinoid may be needed and will be advised after examination. Further treatment will then depend upon the diagnosis. Hope this satisfies your query. Thanks for using HCM. Feel free to ask any more questions that you may have and I am here to help you. Dr Madhuri Bagde Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist
