What Causes Increased Heart Rate?

default
Posted on Thu, 18 Dec 2014
Question: I have a pulse of 108 as measured by a nurse from my neurologist office this afternoon. I see my cardiologist (had heart attack in 3/13) day after tomorrow who seems to downplay my concerns. What should I say to him if my pulse remains the same?

Brief Answer:
THis value needs to be ontrolled before any actions can be taken!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this increased heart rate and all the inconveniences this must have caused you/ A one time measurement of heart rate is not sufficient to make any conclusions as the increase could be caused by several factors like stress, fear, fright, anxiety, exercise, meals, etc. We need to measure this on repeated occasions to make sure it was not caused by a transient factor before looking for possible causes. Foe sure, if it stays high, no doctor would ignore a heart rate of 108 on different occasions as it may actually be raising concern on a disease condition.

My advice is that, get it controlled. If it is high,, the doctors would address it. If not, ask him a specific question on what he thinks the cause of this increased pulse rate is and what is his plan in addressing this. This would ensure that it is addressed appropriately and the decision to act or not is conscious and follows medical guidelines and not a miss.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thank you so much for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
