Posted on Tue, 4 Aug 2015
Question: So when one gets a panic attack, ones blood pressure goes up, correct???

Is this the reason I am getting the odd small bleeding nose??

And while is it that when my chest tightens, I can also have a small coughing fit???

Can this coughing fit turn into something serious...or just drink a glass of water...and it'll stop...

Brief Answer:
panic attacks can cause increase blood pressure.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to HCM.
I understand your concerns.

Panic attacks can cause increase in blood pressure due to sympathetic stimulation in body.
This can be the reason of occasional small bleeds from nose.

During a panic attack, chest muscles can tighten. But coughing during panic attacks can be due to hyperventilation. During hyperventilation, the person finds the way to expand the airway by the way of coughing.

Chest tightness may cause irritation of nerves of chest muscles. This can also be the cause of coughing.

But this is not serious. Drink a glass of cold water and it will stop. Do not worry.

Hope this helps.

Take care.
Thanks.
