What Causes Inability To See Gestational Sac During 10 Weeks Of Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Wed, 13 May 2015
Question: I was told by two doctors that I was pregnant. My last period started on Feb. 2nd. I had 9 home positive pregnancy tests between March and April . I had my first appointment with an OB/GYN yesterday, they ran a standard UA, gave me a run down on what to expect in the next few months, and a 'congratulations on you're pregnancy info packet' ( so technically 3 doctors) and ran OB panel blood work. We could not hear a heartbeat, so they sent me to a ultrasound, the tech would not let me see the screen, and today the dr called me and told me that they severely underestimated how far along I am, because they could not see a gestational sac yet. But the last time I had sex was Feb. 16th. They are running more bloodwork tomorrow. I have had several pregnancy symptoms ontop of it all, smell sensitivity, cravings/eversions, my breasts are bigger and tender, mood swings etc.. I know without the blood work you can't tell anything for sure, but what are the possibilities for what is wrong? Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Can be a missed abortion.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
As per your last periods and positive pregnancy tests you should be at least 10 weeks pregnant. If you did not have sex after 16th Feb then delayed conception is also ruled out.
If there is no lower abdominal pain or irregular bleeding then ectopic pregnancy is also ruled out.
The possibility is of a missed abortion or the radiologist is wrong. The blood tests and a repeat ultrasound scan after a week will help in a definitive diagnosis.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.
