What Causes Hot Flashes When On Coreg, Lipitor And Baby Asprin?

default
Posted on Sat, 17 Jan 2015
Question: My mother is 82 years old. She was in the hospital for 4 days due to extreme dehydration from the flu and sever diarheaa. She was discharged from the hospital just this past Sunday. She is taking 3 new meds. Coreg, Lipitor and a baby aspirin. She is feeling very well. She has had hot flashes on 2 occasions. No dizziness or nausea. In fact she said she felt fine but was just hot. This lasted for about 30 minutes then she was ok. Could this be a side effect or my mother adjusting to the new meds?

Brief Answer:
This sounds like a drug side effect

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
Coreg (carvedilol) is a alfa-beta-blocker.
Lipitor (atorvastatin) is cholesterol-lowering drug.
Baby aspirin- a low-dose aspirin.
Atorvastatin and aspirin & carvedilol can sometimes cause dizziness but none of the drugs your mother is now taking causes hot flushes.
However carvedilol can cause postural hypotension, not uncommon in elderly on anti hypertensive drug.
It will be worthwhile to take her BP on lying and sitting or standing posture after 2 minutes.
