Question: I have been continually becoming more horse. I have Acid reflux and do get severe heartburn. I also have scar tissue in esophagus. Could this be causing my hoarseness? I have to clear my throat more frequently also. I have also had a sore throat off and on.

Brief Answer:
Acid reflux is the cause of your hoarseness...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query

One of the prime cause of your hoarseness is the acid reflux. When the acid from the stomach regurgitates into the throat, the first part in the throat to get exposed are arytenoids and the vocal cords. Hence, there is irritation of the mucosa, followed by inflammation. Inflamed and edematous mucosa makes the vocal cords bulky, leading to hoarseness.

My suggestions to you are:
1. Drink plenty of warm water
2. Do steam inhalation - this will reduce edema over the vocal cords and makes the voice normal.
3. Try taking proton pump inhibitors such as omeprazole or pantoperazole, a prokinteic such as domperidone or metachlopramide. The former will reduce the production of the acid in the stomach whereas the latter prevents the regurgitation of the acid from the stomach into the throat.
4. Avoid those things which induces acidity.

With the above measures you will definitely feel better. Revert back to me if you have any follow-up queries.
