What Causes High Pulse Rate While On Atenolol And Telma?
Question: I am hypertensive for the past 10 years and on Atenolol 50 which was working okay. LAst month the BP was 160/100 so my physician changed for a while to Telma H (Telmisartan and a diuretic) with whihc the BP came down but my pulse was high so he then changed to Met XL (Metoprolol) 25mg twice a day. The BP was then under 140/90.Again after about a month the BP is high- 140-150 to 90- 95.
Now my Dr has changed to Met XL AM once a day.
Will that help? Or will I need a stronger dose?

Thanks for your answer. Also the BP was well below 130/80 with Telma H but I requested my Dr to change since I was not feeling comfortable with the high pulse (about 90).
Some questions pls:
- Metoprolol is a better beta blocker than atenolol?
- So these drugs may need to be reviewed and changed from time to time?
With Tenormin 50 I was very comfortable and never felt any pulse rising etc , but of course the BP may not be getting controlled.
Finally I understand that I need to give a weeks time to Metl XL AM and see if BP is within 130/80 or increase dose to 50/5?
