What Causes High Fever And Nasal Congestion In An Infant?

default
Posted on Fri, 3 Jun 2016
Question: Our daughter is a 10 months old. She is in excellent health. She does not take any RX and has no allergies. She started a fever last Tuesday with some nasal congestion. She has had a fever averaging 102.2. with a high of 103. When she takes Tylenol she eats, drinks, smiles plays. She has no other symptoms. Also her urine has no smell. She urinates with no observed pain or discomfort. Her diapers are wet, so she is urinating
We took her to the clinic yesterday and today. Her normal Ped is out both visits were with the same Resident.
Her ears, nose and mouth were examined with no findings. The doc listened to her chest and she had no fluid or wheezing listed to her heart no issues. The doctor sent us home both visits and said if her symptoms get worse come back.
What should we be doing at this time( a blood test?) or wait? If we wait till when? Our concern if we wait and she has something serious ( bateria/infection) could waiting and not treating with antibiotics could this lead to something more serious

Brief Answer:
Seems to be a viral infection

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through the details and understand your concern. Most often such symptoms are due to viral infections and antibiotics are ineffective in such cases. Give steam inhalation to your child. Water vapor will reach deep inside and would help in diluting the cough and thus would provide relief. You need to give paracetamol to bring down the temperature. If paracetamol is not effective in bringing down the temperature, you need to use Meftal-P (mefenamic acid) which is more effective. Also use tepid sponging. Giving some antiallergic like cetirizine will take care of the runny nose.

Please be patient, it should spontaneously resolve in 5-7 days. It is unlikely to worsen if you wait. You need not grow apprehensive. Blood tests give normal results in case of viral infections.

Regards
