default
Posted on Tue, 23 May 2017
Question: Hi,
What can it be that I feel myself well and healthy untill my bowel movements. I used to have had one bm a day. Now, I feel constipated, when I am finally done with my bm I get high blood pressure for about 3-4 hours it goes up to 145/70 than goes down to 100/60. Than I feel a little discomfort in my stomach or pain. I change my diet . I eat much less. Is there anything I should worry about? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Vasovagal phenomenon.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query.
The most likely possibility here is that you are having something known as a vasovagal reaction. The vagal nerve is one of the most important nerves in the body, whose job is to regulate basic body functions, like blood pressure, heart rate, etc. In some people, a strong internal stimulus, such as a bowel movement(specially strong moments as in constipation)and the intestinal contractions leading up to a bowel movement, can sometimes stimulate the vagal nerve, triggering symptoms, like racing heart ,elevation of blood pressure etc. This set of unwanted symptoms is called a "vasovagal reaction."

I would recommend that you go to see your primary care doctor about this issue. A vasovagal reaction is not in and of itself usually dangerous, especially if it is not happening frequently and if it does not lead to passing out or injury. However, it is important for you to have a complete physical check up to make sure that these symptoms you are experiencing are not related to another, more serious medical problem. For instance, your doctor can check for any evidence of a heart problem and rule that out.

As of now there is no need to worry however you should get yourself investigated completely once.Start taking a laxative daily.

Regards.
