What Causes High Blood Pressure After Radiotherapy For Anal Cancer?
Question: I have a complicated health hx. I completed anal cancer treatment in July of 2015. i had problems with the RT treatments, It was stopped and restarted. I had loss of skin and severe redness in anal, vaginal and pubic areas. In August 2015. I was hospitalized for a small bowel obstruction due to Radiation Enteritis. I ultimately had urgent surgery for this in November, 2015. (3 obstrutions removed from small bowe) My recovery was slow especially since I had lost about 10 lbs. I am 5'2" and usually weigh around 125 lbs.Fast forward, lately I have not felt well at all. My head doesn't feel right. I normally have a low BP 110/70. Now it is up to 179/110. Pulse is normal rate. I have not been able to get my BP down to a reasonable level. Sometimes I feel faint. My muscles feel very tight all over my body. I have been using a heat patch on my neck. i am not allowed to have any Nsaids except generic Celebrex 200 mg qd. As a result of my last surgery, I am on daily omeprazole 20 mg. I am an RN, I had my GI doc order blood work. I was concerned about my kidneys. My results were normal. Also, my Blood sugar was 77. I frequetly fell faint and passed out once last fall after having a flu shot. In late 2015 I had a CT of my head/brain and everything was normal. I had the paramedics here yesterday, but couldn't decide if I needed to go to the hospital. Incidentally, I take generic Imodium daily due to diarrhea caused by the radiation. My GI doc is aware. Any thoughts?

I have gone carefully through your query. The body finds it hard to deal with radiotherapy (RT) and has to cope. Essentially the body is in stress and it is not unlikely for the BP to shoot up. The impending crisis in the body needs to be relieved and therefore medical attention is required. The fluctuations is BP can make you feel faint and may give rise to other complications, unless you get it treated properly. I think that you need to go to the hospital.
I would insist you to take curd or yogurt regularly. The RT has messed up with your intestinal flora. Yogurt contains plenty of beneficial bacteria which should help. Merely taking imodium would not suffice.
