Question: Hello, I have my 74 year old father living in my guest quarters for two years now. He is a diabetic & every morning we test his blood & he gets (2) glybuterides tablets. His normal range is usually 115- 140. Today he woke up dazed & confused & when I tested his blood it was 268, I fed him an egg with cheese & a few peices of bacon. I tested about a 1/2 hour after that & it only came down to 247 . We are getting ready for dinner & I just tested his blood & it's now up to 289 ! His pulse ox was low (88) so I put him on oxygen & he has maintaned (94). But the question is about his blood suger level, beside his next meal is their anything else I can do to get his leveldown ?

Brief Answer: What medications is he on? Detailed Answer: Hi and thank you so much for this query. I am so sorry to hear about this abnormal glucose readings that your father has had recently. In a well controlled diabetic patient like you father from the past readings, a spike in his glucose numbers raises the concern of something not going right some where. The first and most important thing to do is to investigate for a possible infection that could be responsible for this. The most common infections are urinary, lung and skin. If these are all ruled out, then his diet would need to be evaluated for any possible changes that may explain this and if nothing can justify this, then I will recommend that his drug dosages should be reviewed. Also, do you know what could have caused the low oxygen reading or is it something normal that has been happening with him? This could be the sign of a lung infection!!! In all, get him evaluated by a medical personnel for a possible infection. His diet and medications should be reviewed if no other cause is identified to be responsible for this. I wish him well. Thank you so much for using our services and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be. Dr. Ditah, MD.
