What Causes High RDW-CV Value In Pregnancy?

Question: Just had first trimester blood work done and I am 11 weeks pregnant tomorrow, my RDW-CV came back high at a 17, what does that mean? Also there was trace for squam epi cells in urine. I have a phone call in for a nurse but of course I am freaking out

RDW-CV is a measure of the variation in the size of Red Blood Cell Width/size and bone marrow stimulation that occurs in early pregnancy due to the fact that more RBCs will be required during the pregnancy, will result in slightly higher degree of variation in the size of different populations of RBCs.

Normal values are 11.5% to 14.5%, and your value is 17%, RDW is not a very specific or sensitive indicator of anemia, hence serum ferritin levels need to be evaluated to find out if you are truly anemic.

And even if you have anemia, it can be effectively managed with iron supplements, there is nothing to freak out.
