What Causes High GGT Level?
Question: Hi,
I am 45 yr old female been feeling fatigued over the past 6 months. My diet/appetite is normal and I do not smoke or drink. I was prescribes Blood and Urine tests.Results which are as follows: (please see attached Reports)
Abnormal values are:
Urea 2.1 (Ref 2.5-7.0)
AST 485 (Ref: 15-55)
LDH 460 (Ref:1-40)
GGT 471 (1-40)
Hemogram
MCV 97.6 (Ref: 80-96)
Iron Studies
Iron 59 (Ref 14-29)
Saturation 0.95 (Ref: 0.15-0.50)
Vitamin B12 1009 (Ref: 140-700)
I am really worried about my High GGT Levels. To be noted that there is a history of Diabetes from my father side. What could these values possibly indicate?
What kind Doctor/ specialist would I need to consult?

A gastroenterologist would be the best option. They deal with all conditions of the gastrointestinal tract including the liver.
AST and GGT are liver function enzymes.
HIgh GGt occurs in: (1)cirrhosis (scarring of the liver)
(2)hepatitis (inflammation of the liver, most commonly by infection),
(3) mass or tumor in the liver,
(4) alcoholic liver disease,
(5) cholestasis (obstruction or slowing down of bile flow in the bile ducts)
(6)pancreatitis
(7)side effect of some medications
(8)some cancers
High AST occurs in the liver conditions mentioned for GGT. Also found in kidney damage, muscle injury
The high iron levels, high saturation, slight increase in MCV may indicate megaloblastic anemia (a type of anemia), iron overload, sideroblastic anemia.
This can be assessed by further tests such as imaging and other bloods
Summary: (1) a gastroenterologist would be the best option
You would need imaging of the abdomen by either ultrasound or CT. In addition further blood tests- eg hep viruses, folate levels , hb electrophoresis (looking at type of hemoglobin)

Can you please explain what could be the cause of a High level of Vitamin B12 in my system? Given my above results, is there a chance this MAY NOT be Cancer and linked to something else or is this a clear indication that it most probably be liver related cancer?
