What Causes Hematoma In Scrotum Post Inguinal Hernia?

default
Posted on Tue, 17 Jun 2014
Question: On May 23 I had surgery for an inguinal hernia. Yesterday (26th) I noticed discoloration -- as if caused by pooling of blood on my scrotum and penus. Is this something to be concerned about? Thanks.

Brief Answer:
It is a post surgery echymosis - not to worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXX ! Good morning. i am Dr Shareef answering your query.

Although not very common now a days with the modern instruments and electro-cautery, it seems that yo have got a post operative hematoma/echymosis of your scrotum and penile area. This means that post surgery few small blood vessels continue oozing blood in minute quantity, which gets accumulated in the loose subcutaneous tissue of the region, scrotum and penile area being the most dependent. Most of the time these usually stop by themselves and the small amount of blood gets absorbed. If I were your doctor, I would expedite the process by giving a good scrotal support and continue with other medications usually advised post surgery.

However, if it increases in size very fast or if you are on anti platelet/anti thrombotic drugs which is usual in this age group, then you have to get it reviewed by your surgeon. Otherwise this will be ok in a few days time.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.

Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. Wishing you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
