What Causes Hematoma Formation On Thigh After An Injury?

Posted on Wed, 23 Jul 2014
Question: I fell 10 days ago and badly bruised my upper thigh. The bruising and swelling extends from above the initial down to my toes. The swelling has not ever gone away. It's down slightly when I wake in the morning, but quickly grows as II use it. Throughout the day blue bruising seems to settle around my heal, ankle and between my toes. My knee doesn't bank without considerable pain & I walk with an obvious limp. My leg was xrayed in the emergency room the day of my injury. There was no fracture. Why does my leg and foot continue to swell everyday, and why is the bruising moving down my leg and foot when that was not injured?

Brief Answer:
hematoma collection in dependent part like foot

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have studied your case.

Traumatic injury can lead to bruise due to hematoma formation.
This hematoma traverses through extra vascular space and leading to hematoma collection in dependent part like leg and foot.
Clinical examination is important to rule out knee or ankle ligament injury

For these symptoms analgesic and medication like Trypsin, chymotrypsin can be started.

Till time apply crepe bandage over thigh and leg or use supportive splint. Do ice fomentation and rest to limb.

If required you may need to do blood investigation for prognosis and recovery.
Colour Doppler study will help to know any vascular injury.
Take precaution to avoid infection around hematoma.
