What Causes Heavy Vaginal Bleeding With Blood Clots After An Abortion?

default
Posted on Fri, 30 Sep 2016
Question: I had an abortion about 11 weeks ago (I was 9 weeks along). That week I had light to moderate bleeding as expected and then heavy bleeding for almost 2mos. In that time period, I passed two HUGE blood clots (total of 4 times) that were literally almost the size of my hand, not including fingers, and very thick. They didn't look like most blood clots, more like chicken livers. I had the most severe cramping (was considering calling an ambulance one of the times) 1-3 hours before they passed in both incidences. After they came out, the cramping subsided. I continued to bleed heavily for almost a week and then it stopped. During that time I went and got a papsmear and std testing. I told the dr what had been going on and she took another look and said everything looked good and apparently the std tests were negative bc I didn't receive "the call." I have since bled moderately to very light on and off. However, the majority of the time it is very, very light, but changes in color from pale pink to brown. About a week ago the bleeding stopped. My boyfriend and I had sex twice during that time (as we had previously when the bleeding would temporarily stop), but the second time he said that he experienced itching immediately after everywhere that "I touched him" (his penis and testicles). The next day, he said the itching was so intense that he wanted to scratch himself to death! That night he used an OTC anti-fungal cream that contained Miconazole nitrate 2% and said he experienced immediate relief and has used it daily since then. We thought/hoped that maybe I had a yeast infection that caused it - like maybe gave him a form of jock itch? Yesterday, I experienced a light bleed (slightly chunky and orangey-brown), but only noticed it one of the times when I went to the bathroom. A few hours after I got to work this morning, I started feeling itchy "inside" and it quickly progressed to the point where I wanted to scratch myself to death - complete misery!! On my lunch I rushed to the store and bought Monistat 1 day maximum strength treatment ovule (Miconazole nitrate - 1200mg in each insert). I went to the bathroom and inserted the capsule-like thing as far in as it would go like instructions say (but not until it hurt or anything). As soon as I pulled it out, a ton of very chunky reddish-orange stuff came rushing out with it all over the floor and everywhere. As if everything else I said hasn't been nasty enough, it looked like vomit. I am so incredibly freaked out right now and it's Saturday evening and I can't get to the doctor until at least Monday. I forgot to mention I also purchased Azo yeast plus oral tablets (Candida albicans 30X, kreosotum 30X, natrium muriaticum 12X, sulphur 12X), which I have taken two of at this point - instructions say take 1 po tid, and Vagisil XXXXXXX strength topical itch relief cream (benzocaine 20%, resorcinol 3%) which I applied immediately after inserting the Monistat capsule. The Vagisil burned at first, but then gave me relief for 2-3hrs, then the itching came back, so I applied more, it again burned at first and then gave some relief (not as much as first time), but only lasted an hour. I am currently soaking in a bubble bath I made with Vagisil pH balance daily intimate wash. Last thing I forgot to mention, the last time we had sex, it hurt pretty bad, especially toward the end - at the time I had assumed it was because, maybe I was sore since we did it only a couple of days before and with everything going on with me, we haven't been able to have sex very often - actually hardly at all.

Here's what I am hoping to get out of this:

First, I am 100% aware there is no possible way for you diagnose me over Internet or for you to know for sure what it is, but...

- Does is SOUND characteristic of - a yeast infection combined with (or possibly indirectly caused by) complications from the abortion - or - an STD (if so, is there any particular one(s) that sounds more likely?)?

- What should I do to make myself more comfortable? What, if anything, should I change to keep myself from literally going insane with this itching until I can get to a Dr?

Thanks in advance for your response and for reading this lengthy message!

Brief Answer:
Yeast infection likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
I have gone through the details provided by you. The repeated reddish brown discharge that you are having can be due to mild retained products. You need to get an ultrasound scan done to confirm that the abortion is complete. The extreme itching that you have is suggestive of a yeast infection. Not likely to be an STD. Can happen due to prolonged bleeding that you had. The yeast infection may need oral antifungals for both of you for at least 2 weeks for a complete relief.
For relief you need to use Monistat pessaries once a day. Do avoid intercourse till the problem is treated.
You may need oral contraceptive pills for 1-2 cycles to regulate the irregular bleeding that you are having.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

Thank you so much!!! I feel a little more optimistic now. It may not be of any further help, but I forgot that I have the medical records. They include all the details of the day of the procedure including an ultrasound and also details from my very first visit when I had the first ultrasound. I uploaded them for you to review. Thanks again!!!

Brief Answer:
Mild tissue is not worrisome.

Detailed Answer:
Retained fetal tissue can be the cause of heavy bleeding that you had. It usually comes out on its own in a few days. No need to worry as the bleeding has decreased now. Do start with birth control pill for regular periods.
Regards.
