What Causes Heavy Periods And Hair Loss After Having Mirena Coil Removed?

default
Posted on Fri, 19 Dec 2014
Question: I am 44 years old and have just had the mirena coil taken out. I am a non smoker, do not drink, eat healthily and I'm very active.
I have got facial hair (on the chin) for the first time and I am losing hair on my head quite severely.
I have had one period since taking the coil out and this was extremely heavy (quite unlike anything I remember before having had children).
My mother and sisters started the menapause in their early 50's. Could I be going through it early? Should I be concerned about the hair loss? I also have zero sex drive, which is now becoming a problem. Any advice would be appreciated. Many thanks

Brief Answer:
Serial gonadotropins n clinical evaluation for menopause n others addressed

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Lasers can be used to remove body hair & a Diode laser or a ND-Yag laser are good options PCOS Polycystic ovary syndrome is related to increase in hair growth especially facial hair and should be looked for in addition to Thyroid function tests. Laser like IPL ( Intensed pulse light). response would be evident from the first treatment , it will take at least 8 to 10 sittings though.

The age range for menopause is variable.
Some women are menopausal at 45 and some at 55 years so the age is not fixed and quite variable.
As menopause advances, the frequency of periods decreases.
The sex drive and vaginal wetness does not immediately disappear

The diagnosis of menopause can be done via serial identification of elevated gonadotropins though clinical context also needs to be weighed in.

As for the hair loss , you should get your blood counts and metabolic profile done and if normal then a dermatologist consultation to have a look at the pattern of hair loss and determine an estimate amount per day. Any local infection if present can be treated via medicinal shampoos containing ciclosporin and fluconazole can be used.

The loss of libido can be related to a number of condition eg menopause, hormonal imbalance, hypothyroidism or depression. If a physical / metabolic cause is not ascertained then I would suggest you consult a psychiatrist so that a XXXXXXX mental state exam is performed. to ascertain depression and or anxiety, Meds can be adjusted afterwards in addition to cognitive behavioral therapy. Yoga and meditation , too have proven benefit in addition to relaxing deep breathing exercise.

Please consult your doctor before taking any medication.
