What Causes Heavy And Persistent Menstrual Bleeding?

default
Posted on Wed, 8 Feb 2017
Question: I have experienced heavier menstrual cycles over the past year. last two months getting my period 4 to 5 days after previous one ended. As of now I have been bleeding heavily for 2.5 weeks, the last week also large and small clots. I thought it might be menopause, but no sign of slowing. No cramps to speak of, occasional low grade fever, but my entire family has recently been sick with colds, in turn. Have no insurance so am reluctant to seek medical care, but as an RN I feel something is wrong.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for writing..
I understand your concern..

Yes, some people during menopause have such irregular bleeding. But in those cases the duration of periods gradually increases and then stop. Based on your description, you seem to have fairly constant period cycle which is not in favour of menopause. Moreover before we conclude this as menopause, it is important to rule out other causes of heavy menstrual bleed. Since you had bleeding for more than 2 weeks with passage of clots it would be better to get ultrasound pelvis to rule out fibroid in the uterus and thickness of endometrium. If scan is normal you need to get a pelvic examination to rule out cervical polyp.

In the meanwhile, you should be started on tranexemic acid 3times daily to reduce the bleeding. PARACETAMOL can be taken for low grade fever. But if still fever persists you need to get evaluated.

In my opinion, your symptoms need to be further evaluated at a gynecologist office.

Hope I have answered your query. Feel free to ask any doubts. Good day
