default
Posted on Fri, 3 Feb 2017
Question: Lately when I wake up in the mornings my heart seems to start beating really fast.. like a panic attack.. it does this for a few minutes then slows down. Is there anything I can do to address this? Will this damage my heart in the long run if it continues?

Brief Answer:
Palpitstions!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Firstly thanks for choosing health care magic for your query!
The problem which you are having is medically termed as palpitations.A heart palpitation is the sensation that your heart has skipped a beat or added an extra beat. It may feel like your heart is racing, pounding, or fluttering. You may become overly aware of your heartbeat. There can be many causes of palpitations.
However most of the time palpitation is usually associated with some pathological or physiological problem with the heart. You have written in your history that you wore a heart monitor for 30days.Kindly be more specific about the investigation done and what were the findings in it ,Was it suggestive of any arrythmia or irregular heart beat.
However to rule out the cause of palpitations i would like to suggest you some of the baseline tests of cardiology like -

24 hour holter monitoring-A small device would be attached to your body for 24hours.It will keep a record of your heart beat (both rate and rhythm) for a perioid of 24 hours. You can also note the time during which you feel palpitations and the rythm at that time could be seen on computer monitor during interpretation of the test.It is the basic and most important test for you.

7 days loop recorder- In case faulty heart beats are not recorded in holter ,A device called loop recorder would be attached to your body for 7days and it will keep a record of your heart beats for 7 days!

Tread mill test -some times the faulty heart beats are precioitated only when the heart is under stress,Tread mill test is designed for that,You will be made to run on a tread mill under monitored condition.Any arrythmia precipitated can be observed on computer recordings.

2d echo -This test will rule out any abnormality in cardiac function, pumping system of heart and will help to find out if all valves of heart are functioning normally or not.
Apart from this Thyroid function test should be done.A increased in level of thyroid hormone can cause palpitations.

Yes this is definitely going to cause heart problem in long term ,Some time arrythmia can also be fatal. So it should be taken seriously and all the tests must be done as early as possible to rule out cardiac disease.

Four tests were conducted on my heart in the last two years:
1. 24 hour holter monitor,
2. treadmill test,
3. echocardiogram,
4. 30-day holter monitor

All these tests failed to find any abnormality or any disease. However, I am still concerned that these symptoms continue to occur. There is heart disease in my family.

Brief Answer:
Electro physiological studies and ablation of faulty tissue!

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,
As all the baseline tests have been performed on you without any result. You should undergo electrophysiological studies.Electrophysiological studies will be done by a electrophysiologist.During electrophysiological studies the cardiologist will provoke the cardiac musles and nodes through various stimulus,In case of any cardiac physiology or pathology faulty heart beats will be precipitated and as per the nature of the beats radioactive ablation of accessory pathways or extra active muscle or scar tissue can be done!

Thank you!

Advice-
Electrophysiological study
