What Causes Headaches And Lightheadedness?

default
Posted on Thu, 23 Mar 2017
Question: Hi, I have had a strange issue lately. For the past few months I have had sensations that I need to sneeze, but the sneeze never completes. I have tried to induce sneezing by using tissue or paper and it works occassionally, but I have not had a natural sneeze in a few months. Does this issue suggest a neurological problem or anything else? I do get occassional headaches and feelings of lightheadedness, but nothing too severe. is this something to worry about?

Brief Answer:
Seems not to be due to neurological cause

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Thanks for sharing your concerns with us. We will try to help you in best way possible.

First of all, based on the history you have shared, it doesn't look to be that pathological, or due to neurological issues as brain stem is involved in sneeze reflex and for that pathology many other pathways are also impaired and isolated loss of sneeze reflex is less likely. And that can be due to loss of motor response to the muscles responsible which is less likely to menifests itself without any other symptoms and with normal swallowing and coughing reflex.

Another possibility of persistant local irritation can be one of the cause of such symptoms where continous irritation may not be enough to lead to powerful sneeze but slight feeling of discomfort may remain. Get a local ENT or otolaryngologist examination for further reassurance.

Using nasal decongestants and anti histamines like cetrizine may be of help in such cases. Wishing you a stable and healthy life ahead.

Hope this has answered your query, if you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Regards.

thanks very much for your response. I did mention this issue to my GP , and he said it's probably nothing and didn't give it much attention. Do you suggest that I just ignore it? Or visit the ENT as you said? the only reason I mentioned a neurological issue is because what I found on a Google search that made me anxious. thanks again for your attention and help.

Brief Answer:
ENT specialist review will be sufficient

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Thanks for the feedback.

Yes as of now, only ENT or otolaryngologist review would be sufficient and no immediate need of neurological examination as we have already discussed in details.

Regards.
