Posted on Tue, 14 Apr 2015
Question: My 4 year old was complaining of a headache for a week now. Yesterday I noticed red dots on her cheek and throughout the day it spread. Today, however, all the dots from her body had dissappeared except for the few that were originally there on her cheek. She had a low grade fever last night and was complaing that her head and stomach hurt. This morning she was complaining instead of the top of her head hurting it was the right side. I gave her somr advil and pedalite and she threw up. My husband and i put her in the bath tup gave her more pedialite and she has eaten 6 pieces of toast. She now says her tummy and head hurts her a little bit....when she getd headaches its only 2 or 3 times a day and she usually will take a nap or its bedtime and she will rest. No loose stool as of now. She ate all the toast 1 hour ago.

Brief Answer:
Advil could be making things worse. Give Tylenol instead.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through the details as well as the attached image. Such symptoms in children of this age is usually caused due to certain viral infections which can last for 5-10 days. It is good to hear that much of the rashes have resolved which could indicate that she is now in the recovering phase. However, instead of advil which contains ibuprofen, I would prefer giving Tylenol for the headache since ibuprofen could lead to worsening of the rashes or could be responsible for her throwing up (it is known to cause gastritis and can lower platelet function).

If the symptoms last for more than another 3-4 days, I would suggest you to visit a doctor and get the child evaluated.

Hope that helps.

She now only says that her head hurts a little bit. No rash at all, but very faded dots on her one cheek, and only threw up that one time.
Now my other daughter is complaining of her head and tummy hurting, but says its her forehead or right side of her head. When I give her tylenol and zofran this seems to help. She napped today which she never does. She will be 6 years old in May. If this is a virus what kind? We know its not hfm, Fifths disease, or the flu.

Brief Answer:
Your other daughter seems to have the same infection

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

It seems that your other daughter has the same infection. It is not unusual for person to person spread occurring. Although such infections are generally viral (flu or flu like illnesses), it could be caused by influenza or several others of myxovirus family but it is hard to pinpoint towards one particular agent.

They both had the flu A and got the mist for FluB

Brief Answer:
The immunization protects against select strains only

Detailed Answer:
The mist that they received, protects them from select strains of influenza for a limited duration. But there ate at least 200 types of similar viruses or viral strains that cause similar illnesses. It is not possible to immunize against all of them and neither would it be rational to try to do that.

I hope you understand.
