Posted on Sat, 17 May 2014
Question: I have a very bad taste in the back of my mouth for the past couple of days. Everthing I eat tastes bad and it is driving me crazy. I have used mouthwash and gargled. Any idea of what is going on. I have also taken claritin suspecting a nasal drip. I am concerned because of a heart condition but no pain or other symptoms.

Brief Answer:
Causes of bad taste....

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Having a very bad taste in the back of your mouth for the past couples of days is suggestive to:
- pharyngitis/tonsillitis
- gastritis
- liver problems

If you have had any runny nose or difficulties while swallowing other than bad taste, it might be related to tonsillitis/pharyngitis. In this case, apart claritin, you might need a course of oral antibiotics after physical examination.

If you are also having heartburn or other symptoms, gastritis can be suspected. Advised to make changes in your diet and start taking OTC antacids.

I also advise to:
- do gargle with water and salt, especially early in the morning and at bedtime
- take 1 teaspoon of olive oil and honey every morning
- keep good hygiene of your mouth

If the bad taste will persist for longer, should consult with your physician and run further tests to exclude liver and stomach problems.

Hope it was of help! Let me know if you have more questions!
