These "visions" both happened when I was slightly bending down with my head down - one happened in the middle of the night when I had gotten up to go to the bathroom and was seated and reaching for the toilet paper; the other when I was leaning down to put a towel in a laundry basket that we keep on a closet floor. In the past I have had several incidents of seeing yellow spots but do not remember if my head was inclined downward. I passed the incidents of yellow spots off as fatigue or residue from a headache. I have had severe headaches in the past, a lot on the right side of my head but not so many in recent years.

I have glaucoma in my left eye and macular degeneration. I use Latanoprost eye drops in my left eye every night time.

I have very good health insurance so am able to go to the doctor whenever I need. I see a pulmonary lung doctor several times a year for asthma - about six months ago he told me (after testing) that my asthma is now considered moderate COPD. I use Symbicort and Tudorza inhalers twice a day and Alberol for the relief inhaler if I need it (not very often). I never smoked but lived and worked with many smokers in the past.

During a knee replacement operation in July 2012 the doctors very unexpectedly found that I had a rapid heart heart beat. It was up to 170 beats a minute; now it is around 80 - I take Metoprolol (37 mg twice a day). My blood pressure is usually 118/70.

I thank you for your help. I am wondering if this is a severe enough situation to go to the emergency room or to at least see a doctor on Tuesday. I feel fine this morning and plan to attend church and go to brunch with a group of church friends. After a few years of being a widow after my husband of 30 years died I remarried in late 2012 and we are an extremely contented couple. I think this is a physical problem of some sort, not a mental health issue. Best wishes, XXXXXXX Berry

Brief Answer:
Needs an EEG

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for the follow-up.
Seeing images of things which do not exist is called a visual hallucination and this mostly has an organic cause. In your case these hallucinations have occured only twice and hence not to bother much at this stage. This could be some vague sleep related imagery which can happen occasionally in the confusional state of awaking. If at all anything has to be done, you can get an EEG done to look for if the electrical activity in the brain is working good. Some times aberrant discharges in the brain can lead to such visual hallucinations and then in that case it needs to be treated by using anti-epileptics.
However I personally feel that the EEG may come normal. You can simply wait if this recurrs and if it is happening recurrently then you may go ahead with an MRI scan and an EEG as well.
Hope this helps,
Wish you good health.
Kind regards
Dr. Srikanth Reddy MD
