What Causes Hair Loss?

default
Posted on Wed, 2 Jul 2014
Question: Im 41, Type 1 Diabetic for 20 years and have no genetic history of hairloss but have been consistently losing hair for last 6 months. Visited a Trichologist who prescribed some herbal meds and Androanagen with the diagnosis that I had DUPA (Diffused Unpatterned Alopecia). The meds perhaps partially helped initially but in the last month the hair loss has dramatically accelerated. I have checked my Thyroid, Iron, Zinc, Vitamin D, B 12, lipid profile etc and are all in order. The one test I added was Prolactin Serum (reading of 37.08 ng/ml, which seems more than twice out of range and Testosterone of 4.27 ng/ml.
Could the elevated levels of Prolactin Serum be a cause for hair loss? If so, what treatment or options are available?
What should I be doing next?

Brief Answer:
i have outlined various possibilities and treament

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to Healthcare Magic,

High prolactin levels doesnt associated with any hair loss, instead it presents with different symptoms.

1. High prolactin levels associated with decreased production of testosterone , loss of libido, gynaecomasia in men that means male infertility.

2. Majority of cases there will be pituitary tumour known as micro/macro adenoma which secretes more amount of hormone. which can be ruled out by taking MRI brain.

3. The upper normal value for serum prolactin in most laboratories is about 20 ng/mL.

4. High prolactin levels can treated by medicines alone known as cabergolin

So please consult your endocrinologist and discuss your treatment options.
