What Causes Greenish Mucus Discharge From Sinus Passages?

default
Posted on Wed, 18 Mar 2015
Question: I have severe Nasal Polups. Been on Prednisone, Pulmicort, rinsing with Saline
several times a day but now the green mucus has totally blocked off Sinus passages. I went for a allergy test, am allergic to mold, grass mix, mucor,,dandelion
cat, etc.
I have a CT scan appointment for possible removal of Polups which are quite large.
What is causing the buildup up of Mucus, nothing I have tried gives me any relief.
Could this be a fungal infection? if so what is the treatment? XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Green mucus most probably because of bacterial or fungal infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the query.

I have read your query , reviewed your medications and understand your concern.

In my opinion , green mucus from Sinus passages most probably because of bacterial infection or fungal infection .

If I were your treating Doctor for this case , I would advice you
do culture & sensitivity of nasal secretion for bacteria as well as fungus ,
CT Scan & Diagnostic nasal endoscopy .

Till then i would advice ,
continue Prednisone, Pulmicort, rinsing with Saline ,
add antibiotic like combination of Ofloxacin + ornidazole twice daily after meal , Combination Steroid nasal spray with antihistamine 2 puff each nostril twice daily like duonase or Nezalast & Antihistaminic levocetirizine + Montelukast combination at night .

If on culture of nasal secretion it comes out fungal then you need to take oral antifungal like itraconazole .

Hope this information helpful to you .If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.

Regards.

We have a slow system in Canada, two month wait for a CT Scan, etc
ENTs do not pursue Fungal infections much, and are resistant to
a culture swath,"Ihave suggested it"

In the meantime do you think that Teatree Oil, Collidial Silver will help, as they are natural source products.

Thank You XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Teatree Oil, Collidial Silver will help little .

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the follow up query.

Green mucus from Sinus passages more likely because of bacterial infection than fungal infection .

I would advice , use antibiotic like combination of Ofloxacin + ornidazole twice daily after meal .It will control bacterial infection & also reduce fungal .You can discuss this with your treating doctor.

On culture of nasal secretion it comes out fungal then you need to take oral antifungal like itraconazole .

Teatree Oil, Collidial Silver will help little . But side effect & adverse reaction to this products not well known .

Today I find out I have a severe Toe Fungas infection, could this be related to the nasal polyps, as I have 100% blockage. IF I have a fungal infection could it be spreading, because no matter how much mucus comes out, the sinus fills right up.

Brief Answer:
unlikely to be related

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the follow up query.

It is unlikely that the toe fungal infection and the nasal polyps are related.

However, going by your symptoms, there is a possibility of fungal infection in nose as well but i would advice take antifungal only after confirmation on culture .Since there are some side effects with anti fungal medication .

On CT scan , we will get idea about fungal involvement in nose & sinuses. Also we will know whether it is spreading or invading bone.

Hope this information helpful .
