What Causes Greenish Mucus Discharge From Nose?

default
Posted on Mon, 16 Feb 2015
Question: I have green mucus coming out of my nose and a burning sensation which I assume is an infection. I also had 2 little spots of blood coming out of my nose when I blow it. I have some Flonaise at home - would that be good to use for this problem or do you have any other suggestions? The weather down here went from very cold to about 30 degrees warmer so I assume that is the problem.

Brief Answer:
rinse nose, check temperature

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

If you've had no other symptoms like headache, malaise, fever etc then this is likely a common cold. Common cold is a mild (usually) infection that causes a runny nose and nasal congestion for a couple of weeks or so. You haven't mentioned when did your symptoms start. I'll analyze how this information would help.

If you've just had the symptoms then this is probably only a simple viral infection. If you've had symptoms that seemed to get better and then you started having worse symptoms again with colored mucus then this could be a sinusitis. In that case Flonaise can help.
Rinsing the nose with normal saline helps clear the sinuses and avoid protracted symptoms.

Severe nasal congestion during the night that makes your sleep troublesome can be treated with decongestants. If you're not having serious trouble with it, you'd better avoid them though.

If you have fever you'd better visit your doctor who will be able to examine you, assess your condition and perhaps prescribe antibiotics.

I hope I've helped!
