What Causes Green Stool?

Question: I have been struggling with constipation and gas. Actually all my life I have dealt with constipation. Since about 4 years ago I started having more gas. I am 59 and have been working on getting my bowels to work better. Three weeks ago I quit Diet Coke. I went to the doctor to talk about my digestive issues. She put me on Gas X 4 x day Ultra Strength to help the gas. It has helped drastically. I also started a probiotic 4 weeks ago. I had a colonoscopy in 2009 and 2012. In 2009 I had a polyp removed and it was benign but had some not so good characteristis. In 2012 I was clean. I will have another one soon. My bowels have been working so much better but the last two days my stool has been green. The stool is perfect in size and consistency but green. I don't recall ever having green bowel movements but I normally have constipation. Since I quit diet coke I have had some flavored water that uses blue and purple dyes. I would like to know your thoughts about the green stool. Thanks.

Do you think the Gas-x had any impact on it?

Brief Answer:
Please continue probiotic intake.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Stool gets green when the bile is not completely digested by a bacteria to brown stercobilinogen. It may happen when the stool passage is accelerated (so you excrete more often than usual) or there is no enough of good intestinal bacteria in the digestive tract (especially after antibiotics intake).
Green stool is not something you should be worried about. Please continue probiotic, and I am pretty sure in next two days you will have normal, brown stool.

Hope this helps.
Regards.

Brief Answer:
I do not think so.

Detailed Answer:
I do not think so. It kind of breaks gas bubbles in your intestines. It does not make much with your stool.
