What Causes Gastritis While On Pain Killers?

default
Posted on Wed, 21 Dec 2016
Question: Hello, I have a 6 year old Grandchild that on November 17 fratured her left arm above the elbow and broke her wrist. She was in children's hospital for the surgery, which took place late afternoon on the 18th. She came home on the evening of the 18th. We removed the pain killers by that Sunday evening and only on Monday did she have a little ibuprofen. Since then on Thanksgiving day - she vomited her dinner, next day seemed okay - no issues, Saturday morning she vomited again in the morning, rest of the day was okay, Sunday and Monday she seemed to have a bowel movement runny and then tonight she vomited everything up once again. What could be going on? Could it be because of the arm? Surgery? or a bug?

Brief Answer:
She is having food poisoning or gastritis

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have studied your case and I think your grand child is having either a food poisoning ( Infection) or gastritis due to Pain killer. This is not related to surgery of fracture for sure. I would suggest you to follow these steps.
1.You need to see your surgeon as she will need proton pump inhibitor like Omeprazole or Lansoprazol. Dose needs to be adjusted according to her weight. Your surgeon can check wound to see if there is any infection.
2.Give her more solids and do not give liquid as chances of vomiting is more with liquid diet.
3.Do not give her Brufen again.
I hope these steps will be helpful for her. Let me know if there is any other followup questions.
thanks
