Posted on Thu, 2 Feb 2017
Question: Hi Doctor,

Wanted to check if it is ok that my 7 1/2 months old baby boy passes urine only 6-7 times a day. He has for last few days not passing urine more than 6-7 times a day. Also he is not passing urine entire night. His urine is pale yellow. He is being fed Nan Pro 2 30 ml twice a day apart from Nestle Cerelac stage-2, idly and Rice. He is breastfed in the night after the 30 ml nan pro milk at 9 pm.

Wanted your advice if this is ok and please advise if we need to do something better to have his urine count increased.

Thanks
xx

Brief Answer:
This is perfectly fine - nothing to worry about it

Detailed Answer:
Hi... I understand your concern. This is perfectly fine and there is no reason why you should worry. If you observe keenly the environmental temperatures are gradually rising and the winter is being shifted to summer months.

Any healthy child will try to conserve the body fluid and this is what your son is also doing. If the kid is accepting feeds well and passing urine 1 in 6 hours and good quantity, you should not worry.

Brief Answer:
Probably the baby might be developing circadian rhythm

Detailed Answer:
Hi... to be even more confident about what is happening at night, with your baby, I will tell you something about circadian rhythm.

Circadian Rhythm means development of recognition of day and night rituals, where in the mind will learn to take rest during the night and also not to do some things at night like urination and defaecation.

While the baby is in the mother's womb, it will be completely dark and the baby will not be sensing any darkness or brightness. After being born the baby's mind will start sensing the difference between darkness and brightness and so will develop appropriate human behaviour accordingly.

Hope this helps and puts your mind at even more ease. I would appreciate if you have any other queries in this regard.

Regards - Dr. Sumanth
