What Causes Frequent Urination After Intercourse Post Hysterectomy?

Posted on Wed, 16 Jul 2014
Question: Hi there!!
I am 47 -It has been 7 weeks since I had an hysterectomy and a bladder tack with a sling. I kept my ovaries. I have been intimate with my husband as of last night - is that okay? My doctor suggested I wait until 8 weeks so I was just 6 days shy of that. I feel great except I still feel like I have to urinate a lot. I have had a UTI since the surgery. I had a catheter for 3 weeks and I self cathed for about 10 days. I just finish macrobid (sp?) today. I have had a few other antibiotics also. I am active and really sort of antsy about getting back to regular life but I want to smart about all of this. Today I left a urine culture to make sure that my infection is gone. I was not sure if you could recommend anything to help - maybe foods/ drinks to avoid or vitamins to take. This may be normal? The sling seems to be good but I have worried maybe it is too tight? Thank you so much.

Brief Answer:
Few days short unlikely to cause any harm.

Detailed Answer:
welcome to the forum.
Rest period and abstinence form sex is a general guide to aid proper healing of the operated area.
Otherwise , a little earlier sex is unlikely to cause any damage , especially because you feel ok.
You have had enough of antibiotics, still we cannot rule out UTI.
Urine culture will definitely guide if antibiotics are really needed.
Healthy food habits and plenty of oral fluids will help flush out the bacteria.

Few tips to prevent UTI in general for women...

1. Empty the bladder before and after sex.
2. empty the bladder at bed time even if sex is not planned.
3. Free oral fluids to help flush out the bacteria.
4. Cranberry juice extract.

Hope i have cleared your doubts,
