Posted on Sat, 18 Jun 2016
Question: Hi,
My Son (10 months) has frequent red eyes and starts rubbing with hands. There is NO other visible sign of problem in vision. 1 Doctor suspects that he has Cylinder +1.5 or 1.75 ,180 and require Dilation and glasses for correction.

Is it abnormal at this age?Wouldn't it outgrow by time and what is the best way to confirm and solution. What is risk if left for self heeling?

Brief Answer:
Anti allergy drops to continue

Detailed Answer:
My dear,
thanks for sending your query to us.
The child has allergy. For this, compounds like L pred are to be avoided as this is a steroid and steroid exposure has lot of problems in the long run. As attacks of allergy keep recurring you have to use safe eye drops like Olopat.
Eyebrex is an antibiotic and there is no infection so it can be avoided.
The refraction you mentioned for the child may be ignored for a while as children outgrow these powers, unless there is any additional squint.
Keep a watch and glasses power can be rechecked as yearly follow up.
These powers can be checked by computers objectively. Probably there is no reason to worry just now.

Thank you Sir for response. As you mentioned, how we can monitor/ observe if there is any additional squint? Also as you said powers can be measured by computer, does it also required dilation before test or simple test by computer?

Brief Answer:
Monitor the child.

Detailed Answer:
My dear,
thanks for getting back to me.
Just simple observation that both eyes are. straight and if any doubt consult a doctor.
Measurements by computer do not need dilatation, one just has to put the chin over chin rest and computer does the rest.Only issue with small children is co operation of putting the chin is a issue.
