What Causes Frequent Nosebleeds And Headaches In An Overweight Diabetic?
Question: I get nose bleeds often. The blood seems very thin and watery. I notice headaches on my left side and over my left eye. I take Atenolol and coozar for blood preasure but feel like my heart pounds a lot more twards the evening. I had a stress test, EKG and an echo gardiogram and had to were a halter monitor. my doctor said the tests showed my heard strong. I am a 56 year old male hipertention and overweight with type 2 diabeties on 2 types of insulin. what could cause this bleeding and what can I do myself to stop these nose bleeds when they occure. today I had 3 nose bleeds and lost plenty of blood each time.

Nasal bleed in adults could be due to various reasons. To mention a few:
1. Dry nose
2. Hypertension
3. Medicines such as blood thinners and anticoagulants
4. Nose picking
5. Sinusitis
6. Environmental related, etc.
According to your history I do feel, your nasal bleed could be either due to hypertension or dry nose. Normally, all the blood vessels in the body contain certain weak points known as aneurysm. Nose is richly supplied with blood and contains numerous blood vessels. During raise in the blood pressure, the micro-aneurysms in the nose breaks off, leading to nasal bleed. And, once the pressure reduces the aneurysms will seal again. Also, in dry nose, the blood rich nasal mucosa cracks causing damage to the blood vessels and thus bleeding.
Do not worry! With appropriate measure, this problem can be solved.
My suggestions to you are:
1. Get your blood pressure checked during the time of nasal bleed.
2. Consult an ENT specialist for a complete examination of the nose. You may require an X-ray of the paranasal sinuses and diagnostic nasal endoscopy.
3. Use saline nasal spray. Saline keeps the nasal mucosa moist and prevents nasal bleed.
4. First aid for nasal bleed - pinch the soft part of the nose, sit in a comfortable position and put your head down. You can also place a cold pack over the nose.
5. Avoid, coffee/smoking/forceful blowing of the nose and nose picking.
