Question: I have been passing black stools but with no pain. I had a colostomy check up which was good. Why is this happening? The bowels are also foul smelling.

Brief Answer: it can be due to upper gastrointestinal bleeding Detailed Answer: Hi, Thanks for writing to HCM. It looks like the painkillers you took post accident have caused gastric ulcers and they are bleeding now. That black stool is called malena and it signifies upper gastrointestinal tract bleeding. You need to get an endoscopy done to identify and control bleeding point. And till then start on a proton pump inhibitor tablet like pantaprazole or omeprazole to control acid production by stomach. Hope i have been helpful. Regards Dr. Ashish Verma
