What Causes Fluid Filled Bumps On The Upper Right Cheek?

default
Posted on Fri, 1 Jul 2016
Question: I have some small , what appear to be fluid-filled bumps on my upper right cheekbone under my eye. They appeared yesterday and the area has swelled up today. My skin also feels very sensitive alongside my nose and above my lip on the same side of my face. Some small bumps have appeared here also between this morning and evening. I work in a school and the school nurse thought it could be poison ivy or sumac, yet it's not itchy, just some pain and sensitivity when touched. I also have a slight swelling of a gland below my right jaw and the one next to my right ear is sensitive to the touch. I've put some calamine lotion on the small bumps everwhere but the ones near my eye, as I don't want to risk getting it in my eye.

Brief Answer:
Description matches with shingles. Kindly send picture.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome and thanks for posting your query to the forum.

I can understand your concern for the fluid filled bumps over one side of your face. After analyzing the complete query I make a diagnosis of herpes zoster also known as shingles. The typical description given by you matches with the same.

I request you to kindly send a good resolution picture of the affected area. For that you have a feature on the right side of the page.

It is better that you should meet your primary care physician and get the diagnosis confirmed. An earliest of therapy helps to resolve and manage the condition best.

I went to urgent care after work yesterday, as the tiny bumps became large blisters by day's end. Your prognosis was correct. I do have shingles. I also have an opthalmologist appt. monday morn, due to the puffiness around my eye. I'm taking one antiviral pill twice a day, every 12 hours for five days. Have taken three total so far. How long before I see improvement? Swelling seems worse today. Also, I've been taking ibuprofen for the pain, but doesn't seem enough. The shingles are also on my right lip and even a few bumps inside my mouth. My front tooth, right side is very painful, as is my lip and my facial skin. Would you recommend I get some prescription painkillers? Thank you for your help.

Brief Answer:
Take proper dose of antiviral and pain killers.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome and thanks for your further follow up.

I am really empathic to know that you have shingles as I suspected.

It is really good that you have started with antiviral tablets. Shingles is one of the most painful conditions and takes minimum two weeks to get better. The most important part is the starting of antiviral tablets. If it is started within 48 hours then the effect is good. It is less effective if started after 72 hours. I suggest you to kindly take the same strictly as recommended by your doctor.

It is the pain part which is most troublesome in persons above 50 years of age. In my patients I suggest them to take Paracetamol with tramadol in for two times in a day and Pregabalin at night time.

I suggest you to have proper follow up with your treating doctors for earliest recovery.

My best wishes for your earliest recovery.

With regards,

Dr Sanjay Kanodia
