Question: dear doctor,
For last two days there has been discharges from my left ear with pain and numbness around the ear. There is a hole in my ear drum. Doctors r says it is 80% of the ear drum. My local doctor prescribed me with cefuroxime axetil tab 500, oncet cf tab and tobastar ear drop. When I search Internet it says that tobramycine can lead to hearing loss. Suggest what to do and also the medication.

Brief Answer:
You can change the ear drops

Detailed Answer:
Hello

The best thing would be to change your ear drops to ciprofloxacin ear drops, put 2 drops 4-5 times a day in the left ear.

Tobramycin is a good drug and is very useful in chronic ear infections, the hearing loss due to tobramycin occurs only inn prolonged usage and high doses. Short term use of tobramycin is not likely to cause hearing loss.

The best thing would be to ask your ent doctor to take an ear swab and send it for culture. This will help the causative micro organism causing the infection and help direct further antibiotic therapy.

Brief Answer:
Yes you must take precautions

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Yes you must take adequate precautions to prevent the infection being transmitted to your daughter.

Please wash your hands with soap and if possible a sanitizer before you touch your daughter.

You must not stop breast feeding as it is more important for your baby, however just take care of adequate hygiene.

Cefuroxime can be taken by breast feeding mothers and will not harm your child, please dont worry.

Take care
