Question: (Trans.ref.no. - HCM176763)
I take several exercise classes for Seniors, and no matter if I have eaten or not, or whatever I eat, when I exercise I have to pass a lot of rectal gas. Is this common and what can I do to lessen it?

Brief Answer:
Considerations

Detailed Answer:
Hello & thank you for submitting your question to HCM.

Physical exercise is actually a lesser known remedy for relieving gas and even aiding in constipation. Thus, you're experiencing one of the many natural beneficial effects of exercise, unfortunately at an inconvenient time. It might help to do some warm up exercise prior to the class in a private location where you can hopefully expel the gas before joining your class. You mentioned that you have a medical history of collagenous colitis, which is controlled by diet. Colagenous colitis most often causes diarrhea, but may possibly cause excess gas. Also, diet modification may help with reducing gas--if possible, try not to eat any heavy foods at least 1 hour prior to exercise class. I hope this is helpful.

Sincerely,
Dr Galamaga
