What Causes Flashes Of Light In Peripheral Vision Post Eye Injury?

Question: Hello, about a month ago I was punched in the right eye, at which time I could only see yellow light in the middle of the vision, everything in the peripheral was dark. Next day I was able to see but everything was blurry and I was seeing dark spots in the peripheral vision. I went to the ER, and they diagnosed me with vitreous hemorrhage and traumatic iritis. I was prescribed a steroid, and now off from it. Two weeks into the treatment I went for a follow up, and they dilated the eye, and did all kind of tests, including one where they were pushing on the eye from all angles. They did not find any issues and told me to continue with the treatment. 4 days later, I developed these balls of light that go from bottom to top and from top to bottom in the peripheral vision. Sometimes I just see a small flash in the peripheral vision too. This happens every 5 minutes or so when I am active. I went back to the eye hospital a few days later and told them about the new symptoms following their "eye pressing" exam. They again dilated my eye and did another "eye pressing" exam where they did not find any tears or detachments in the retina. My vision is getting more clear every week, but these flashes and balls of light that go from up down, and from down up are still there. I also noticed that when I stand in a fully dark room, and looking down with my eyes, if I was to raise them up fast, I would see a small flash on the bottom side of my vision, same thing would happen if I was to look up and move my eyes down fast. Another thing is if I was to stand in a bright room for 10 minutes or so, and suddenly turn off the lights to complete darkness, I would see that ball of light going up or down in my peripheral vision on the side. I am concerned with these symptoms, and need to know what it could be, and how it should be treated. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
These symptoms are because of vitreous hemorrhage.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to health care magic.

I am Dr. Dadapeer K, an ophthalmologist and I answer health problems related to eye.

I reviewed your history.
It seems from the history that you had a injury following which you are having viteous hemorrhage and traumatic iritis.
The floaters and flashes of light are because of vitreous hemorrhage. They are because of blood particles moving in the vitreous.
No need to worry as you have undergone indirect ophthalmoscopy examination by scleral depression ( the test you have undergone by eye pressing) and since it is not showing any retinal problems like retinal tear or retinal detachment.
These floaters and flashes will resolve once the vitreous hemorrhage resolves. Vitreous hemorrhage usually resolves by 6-12 weeks.
Do continue the treatment as advised by your eye doctor you will be fine.

Hope the information is helpful to you.

Thank you
With regards
