What Causes Fever With Drowsiness And Convulsions In Children?

default
Posted on Tue, 21 Apr 2015
Question: My 2 1/2 yr old son has had a viral infection for many weeks now. 2 weeks ago he had amoxicillin for an ear infection & chesty cough. He is now running a temperature of 39, very sleepy & not his normal self. Also having jerking episodes which last anything from 30 seconds to 4 minutes. Should I call 111? I seem 2 have spent the last few weeks going to the doctors so don't want to seem like an over anxious mum. (Altho the last time I called was because my daughter has scarlet fever again)

Brief Answer:
seems to be encephalitis

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your question and understand your concerns that your son is having fever with jerky movements.

Based on your clinical details, it appears to be complicated viral illness, could be encephalitis (brain coverings infection). With the symptoms of ear infection followed by fever with drowsiness and convulsions (fits) needs to visit an emergency room for exact diagnosis and treatment.

He may require anti convulsants, antibiotics and monitored care in view of drowsiness (over sleepiness). Mean time, continue tipid sponging and paracetamol syrup thrice daily to avoid febrile convulsions.

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.

He also hasn't passed urine for over 12 hrs, since 11pm last night. I phoned 111 as he was jerking even more. I have just spoken to a dr & am awaiting an appointment for him to be seen.

Brief Answer:
seems to be dehydration.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

Thanks for considering my answer and for your follow up.

Anuria (not passing urine) cold be due to severe dehydration, it could be corrected by intravenous fluid therapy, monitoring renal function tests and urine out put by catheterisation.

Take care.
