What Causes Fever After Receiving DPT Vaccination?

default
Posted on Thu, 15 Sep 2016
Question: hi -I have twins and they just received their 15mo vaccines after their well visit this afternoon. At about 7pm after dinner, one, XXXXXXX started crying hysterically and sticking out his tongue sometimes. I thought he may have bitten it during play. I held him, gave him juice and being that he felt warm, I took his temp. at about 8pm. I found he's running a slight fever of 100.2. He drank cool water/juice mixture and ate a small portion of yogurt for dessert, which would have been our normal routine, but a bit earlier in the evening. Then, our other twin, XXXXXXX looked pale and then started crying. Prior to this, he was playing and seemed fine. He also took his juice and yogurt. However, as precaution, I took his temperature after he started crying and find he has a temperature of 101.4, his leg also seems sore (a bit red at the injection site) and he started lifting the sore leg. Once I saw they each had a fever, I gave them a cool sink-bath and put them in T-shirts and pampers for bed. Are these normal reactions? What should I watch for and how often?

Brief Answer:
Normal reaction to DTP vaccine

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through your query and understand your concerns. It seems to be due to the effect of DTP vaccine which is a part of the 15th month vaccine schedule. Fever and discomfort is a known reaction that is often seen but resolves in a couple of days without any intervention. Such reactions are normal and you need not worry. Give them paracetamol or tylenol drops when required. Be patient. Hopefully they would be fine again soon. You need not worry.

The things that you need to look out for are:
* Lethargy
* Reduced urinary output (less than 6-8 times in 24 hours).

Unless that is the case you need not grow concerned.

Feel free to write back.
