What Causes Feeling Of Strings In Mouth With Normal X Ray Result?

Posted on Sat, 6 Sep 2014
Question: My 79 year old mother has had the continual sensation of “strings in her mouth” for about a year. She feels them between her teeth and is constantly trying to get them out. However she is unable to pull one out to show us – as she explains they are like thin rubber bands and snap back when pulled.
We have looked in her mouth when she feels them and we see nothing – which frustrates her as she thinks we think she is crazy and that we don’t believe her.
She has been seen by her dentist and he finds nothing. He also took xrays and found nothing – and hoping to ease her mind but she swears they are there.
Could this be something with her gums and/or tongue that is cause this sensation? What can we do about this?

Brief Answer:
mucous saliva

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to HCM.
I have gone through your question and understand your concern.

Is she taking any medication? Sometimes due to low saliva secretion or very thick mucous salivary secretion these types of symptoms can be seen. May different medications can lower salivary output.

You have mentioned that she has been to a dentist, and they didn't see anything serious. That is comforting and gives us time to figure out what is going on. Meanwhile, tell me about any medication history and type of saliva.

Waiting for your information.

Brief Answer:
can cause salivary changes

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome again.

According to the drugs you have mentioned it seems that she has a heart trouble for which she is taking Atenolol, Atorvastatin and Eliquis .

Nexium is used for heart burn or gastritis.

Donepezil hcl and Namenda for dementia

Duloxetine is an antidepressant

Allopurinol is used for Hyperuricemia.

some of these drugs like Namenda and Donepezil has the side effect of dry mouth due to less saliva secretion.

i would suggest you to visit your doctor under which you are taking these medications. Doctor might change some of the drug according to the problem.

hope this answer helps.Take care.

Regards
Dr. Shesh
