What Causes Fecal Incontinence While On Nitroglycerin Balm For Anal Fissure?

default
Posted on Fri, 13 Oct 2017
Question: I was diagnosed with an anal fissure yesterday and given nitroglycerin balm. My issue is that I continue to have a feeling that I have to defecate. I have been drinking water, eating the proper foods, pretty much doing everything recommended to help have softer bowel movements. But I can't stop the feeling of constantly feeling like I have to go again. In fact, I usually can go again - not much stool really and not hard to pass - though painful. But how can I calm my stomach down to stop this urge? Is this a symptom of the fissure itself?

Brief Answer:
Stress can be the reason.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Such symptom is not due to fissure for sure. It may appear due to nitroglycerine cream usage as it relaxes the anal muscle.
Most likely such urge to have a bowel movement is due to stress, bad diet, IBS or (in rare cases) large intestine polyp or even a cancer (very unlikely at your age).
It would be good to have your first colonoscopy done at this point.
I suggest you to consult gastrologist. In a meanwhile, please try to use some relaxing technique (the best on is typical physical activity like jogging or pool swimming or what ever you like to perform). Avoid coffee, caffeinated drinks and add magnesium to your diet.

Hope this helps.
Regards.
