What Causes Fatty Liver?

default
Posted on Mon, 19 May 2014
Question: Sir,
My husband was suffering from severe chest pain. In the scanning report we could find that liver size is 13.4 and fatty inflammation of liver was also there. He took medicine after consulting a dr for 3 months. Severe chest pain is not there now. We scanned again. But liver size increased to 14.1. Result shows mild fatty infiltration of liver. He is not an alcoholic person. Pls advise.

Brief answer....nothing to worry.
Detailed answer...
Hello,
Thanks for the query.
I understand your anxiety on this issue but there is nothing to worry.
I have seen the reports sent by you.
This condition where fat gets deposited in liver cells in the absence of any alcohol consumption is called as NAFLD ( non alcoholic fatty liver disease ) .
Indian men have high prevalence of this problem because of their genetic structure however there are other reasons for this like consumption of medicines like steroids and antiviral drugs and consumption of soft drinks and transfats.
Treatment requires...
Avoiding sugar and transfats.
Doing regular aerobic exercises for 45 minutes a day and shedding your weight.
Medicines like metformin
Statins if cholesterol level are high.
Consumption of VIT E.

In few cases ,fatty infiltration of liver may progress to XXXXXXX Where additional inflammation and fibrosis of liver takes place and this may progress to liver cirrhosis in some.

I hope it helps, however you may revert to me for any further query.
Best of luck
Thanks
